About me
I broke a world record on Defender on the Atari 600XL when I was twelve. Warranted the magazine the record was in was two years old, and the record listed was set on an arcade machine. And being a Southland farm boy, I didn’t know who to tell about it anyway…or think to take a photo. Still, it was that day that I fell in love with computer games. Then I grew up to be a TV writer. The sensible choice in the New Zealand writing market, and a good one thus far. Storylining for Shortland Street, the world’s fastest produced serial drama, has taught me to write fast, clear, and on time, every time. It’s taught me to play nice with others in a highly pressurized environment, and to bring ninety-nine more ideas to the table than will ever get used. So why do I want to jump ship? I’m a fantasist as well as a dramatist. Genre fiction has always been my spiritual home, and genre fiction is the bread and butter of gaming concepts. And I’ve always believed that stories should be interacted with, played with…lived. Why read about Narnia when you can step through the wardrobe yourself? I studied virtual reality and the cinematic techniques of immersion at university (along with autodidactic courses in Diablo and Privateer 2). And for my Scriptwriting Masters at the International Institute of Modern Letters, I wrote fantasy adventure game, thinly disguised as film script. I’ve never been able to shake my obsession with interactive storytelling, and now I’m wondering why I ever tried. Here I am, Edwin McRae, scriptwriter and fiction engine at your service.
